Curt's love of boats is apparent in both the business Curt established and in his artwork. He painted many boats, from small dinghies to ships with many masts. Curt established "Whiticar Boat Works" building boats for clients all over the world. Frequently, when a boat had been built at Whiticar Boat Works, Curt would present the new owner with a painting he had made of the boat.
Curt’s knowledge of animals and nature is featured in many of his paintings. He especially liked to portray the grace and beauty of area birds in his art. Frequently, when he would mimic the call of a bird, he would get a return call back from the bird. He named one of the branches of his business "Shearwater Marine" after the long-winged oceanic birds.
Another interest of Curt’s was history, especially local history. He lived in Stuart, Florida for 100 years, and his book “Whiticar Waterway Tales” is a personal narrative reflecting his life during this time. He was an avid reader of historical magazines, articles and books. Several of his historic paintings are on display at the local museums: The Stuart Heritage Museum, The Elliott Museum, and the House of Refuge Museum.
Curt’s love of nature is shown in his Florida inland scenes. The beauty of the trees and rivers is reflected in a variety of colors and landscapes. He also features a variety of animals, especially birds in his paintings. Although he always lived near the ocean, he enjoyed traveling. One of his first paintings was done at the base of a waterfall in North Carolina.
Curt’s life revolved around the ocean. He, his father, and his two brothers were commercial and charter boat captains. He built boats that he designed to handle the rough ocean waters. On his “day off”, he frequently loaded his family into a boat and went fishing and swimming. He had a vast knowledge of the ocean and the animals that lived in and around the ocean and surrounding rivers.
Curt enjoyed colorful scenes. Florida has some especially beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Of course, most of these are viewed with the ocean or rivers reflection. And, the trees give a contrast with the sky. He especially enjoyed painting palm trees and pine trees.
